Je l&rsquo;ai \u00e9crite pour Auxane Cartigny, magnifique pianiste de jazz capable d&rsquo;une grande libert\u00e9 dans tous les styles, mais aussi dans celui de la valse musette. Le piano se d\u00e9ploie comme un fil continu de la pens\u00e9e, jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 ce que le violon vienne perturber le cours tranquille des choses.<br><br>L&rsquo;\u0153uvre d\u00e9bute dans le vieux Paris et son atmosph\u00e8re faubourienne, \u00e9voqu\u00e9e par des valses et des r\u00e9f\u00e9rences \u00e0 \u00c9dith Piaf et Jos\u00e9phine Baker. Le faubourg, c&rsquo;est aussi ce qui se trouve au-del\u00e0 des murs de la ville, au-del\u00e0 de ses fronti\u00e8res, et c&rsquo;est ainsi que l&rsquo;\u00e9criture change, nous emm\u00e8ne ailleurs et fait se rencontrer des mondes tr\u00e8s diff\u00e9rents ou \u00e0 inventer.<br><br>Je me suis attach\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00e9crire les transitions entre les diff\u00e9rents univers musicaux pr\u00e9sents dans la pi\u00e8ce, l&rsquo;id\u00e9e \u00e9tant que l&rsquo;on peut faire de grands sauts de style ou d&rsquo;ambiance \u00e0 condition de les aborder subtilement. It lasted some half an hour, and covered a wide range of moods and episodes. And it worked superbly.<br><br>We began with an almost filmic opening, an impressionist wash of violin colour verging on the realm of Mantovani. That led into a pianistic rhapsody. Pianist Auxane Cartigny was joined slowly by the double-bassist Zacharie Abraham and the percussionist Philippe Maniez. The three men were isolated at the front of the stage. It was only after a considerable time that Fiona Monbet laid down her baton, picked up her amplified violin and bow, and joined the other three to make up a full jazz quartet. The orchestra participated in the development of the material in a series of episodes both lyrical and rhythmic, and even the police whistle made a reappearance.<br>Towards the end, the original trio had an extended and largely unaccompanied cadenza, with some particularly subtle combinations of colours. Next, the orchestra emerged with a Sibelius-like sunrise followed by a gloriously off-beat dance with a panache that reminded me of the giddy waltz from Khachaturian\u2019s <em>Masquerade. <\/em>With yet another side-slip, this moved into the field of Irish dance. <br><br>The concerto \u2013 for that is clearly what it is \u2013 came to a cheeky conclusion in which Monbet\u2019s amplified violin competed in duet with the orchestral leader Lesley Hatfield.
